Pain signals are sent to the brain through nerves in the spinal cord. The brain has to process the signals in order to tell your consciousness what is going on. That processing is done in one particular part of the brain. The study found that if you have thoughts, whether positive or negative, those thoughts are processed in a different area. That information is used to modulate how the 1st center processes the signals.
