Scoliosis
Scoliosis is the situation where the spine has curve or wave shape from side to side. Generally, the spine is essentially vertical when looking at someone's back. It is quite common for someone to have a slight 'C' or 'S' shape, however pain and some form of dysfunction can occur when the curves are larger. This is usually diagnosed by your Doctor or Chiropractor after they have seen some imaging of your back.
The causes of Scoliosis come in 2 categories: Congenital and Acquired. Congenital means that it happened as you were growing up; acquired means that it developed as a result of something else. An example of how it is acquired would be if you constantly carry something heavy on the same side, causing the muscles to be quite strong on one side and weaker on the other.
For most people, treatment is about management and reducing their daily aches and pains. Massage therapy is a popular choice for helping those with scoliosis be functional.
